QUINNIPIAC BOBCATS -3.5
In what amounts to the biggest game in school history, the Quinnipiac Bobcats host Robert Morris tonight in the Northeast Conference Championship that will be televised nationally on ESPN2. While the Bobcats match up well in terms of overall talent, they are also fortunate to be in their home arena, TD Bank Sports Center. This should be a big advantage as the Bobcats are just one of 11 schools to own a perfect record at home this season (14-0).
Robert Morris leads the all-time series between these programs 14-8, however when these teams met earlier this season at RMU, Quinnipiac was able to escape with a 87-79 win. This is only the second time in their history that Quinnipac will be playing in the NEC Championship. In their prior trip, they fell to the hands of CCSU in the 2002 season, but will hope for a different result, as this is the first time they have had the opportunity to host a conference title game. Quinnipiac comes into tonight's match up riding a 5 game win streak and had a bit of a wake up call when they out dueled a scrappy Long Island team in the semifinals, 83-78. Robert Morris comes in winners of 2 straight and coasted to a 80-62 win over Mount St. Mary's in semi final play.
These schools tied with a 15-3 regular season conference schedule, but Quinnipiac won the tiebreaker due to the head to head match up. Despite having identical conference records, Quinnipiac is head and shoulders above the rest of the conference in terms of talent and depth. The Bobcats have a great deal of talent and are led by NEC Player of the Year Justin Rutty, who averages 15/game to go along with 11 Reb/game. Rutty was joined by teammate James Feldeine, who led the Bobcats in scoring at 17/game, on the NEC First Team. Also paying major contributions to the Bobcats this season has been James Johnson's 12/game. In the prior meeting with Robert Morris this season, Johnson went off for a game high 28.
The strength of Quinnipiac's success this season has been their ability to rebound the basketball. They are just one of 3 teams in the country to rank in the top 10 in both rebounding margin and rebounds/game, joining Kentucky and Radford. In this seasons prior meeting, QU out rebounded RMU +9. The Bobcats are also 11-0 this season when scoring 80+ and for 2 teams that like to play at a quick pace, this should suit well for Quinnipiac. Overall, there is just too much talent on this Quinnipiac team and should be able to pull away from RMU behind an electric home crowd.
